Importing References from PubMed Into RefWorks

Introduction

This tutorial will show you how to import references from PubMed into RefWorks.

Use the active webpage on your right to complete the tutorial.

Logging Into RefWorks

In order to access RefWorks, log in on the screen to the right.

If you have never used RefWorks before, click here to access the Creating a RefWorks Account tutorial.

How to Access PubMed

After you have logged in to RefWorks, click here to access the Library's Home Page. (http://library.ucmerced.edu)

(This should open to the right of these instructions.)

Then:

  • Select the Databases tab in the QuickSEARCH box, and type PubMed into the search bar.
  • Click on Search.

  •  Select PubMed from the list of options.

How to Search in PubMed

Type laughter into the search bar at the top of the screen. Then click on Search.

Results for your search will be displayed on the page. Check the boxes next to any that look interesting (pick at least one or two).

From here, there are two methods you can use to import references into PubMed using RefWorks. Each method will be explained in the tutorial.

Method 1:

Click on the dropdown menu next to Display Settings and select MEDLINE.

*Note: This will be near the top of your screen, above the list of search results.

Click Apply.

A page of data will appear.

Try to remain calm.

All you need to do is copy the data on the page. Select the text and copy it by typing command-C on a Mac or control-C on a PC.

Now, click here to return to RefWorks.

Hover over References in the bar at the top of the screen. From the dropdown options, select Import.

Note: You may need to do this in a new window to access RefWorks' functionality.

 The Import References box will appear. Configure the following:

  • In the dropdown next to Import Filter/Data Source, select NLM PubMed.
  • In the dropdown next to Database, select PubMed.
  • Click on the orange letters that say From Text, and paste the data you copied from PubMed in the box.

Then click Import.

Congratulations! You have now imported references from PubMed into RefWorks. Click on View Last Imported Folder at the bottom right of the Import References box to see your references.

Method 2:
Click here to return to PubMed Search Results for laughter

  • Select several items from your PubMed search results for laughter (use the same ones as before, or select new ones).
  • Click on the dropdown menu next to Send to
  • Under Choose Destination, select File
  • In the same box, under Format, select MEDLINE
  • Click Create File, at the bottom of the box

A new box will open, asking what you want to do with the file.

Select Save File, and note where it is saved on the computer. (Note: your computer may automatically save the file to Downloads)

Now, return to the RefWorks tab.

In RefWorks, hover over References in the bar at the top of the screen. From the dropdown options, select Import.

The Import References box will appear. Configure the following:

  • In the dropdown next to Import Filter/Data Source, select NLM PubMed.
  • In the dropdown next to Database, select PubMed.
  • Next to Select Text File, click on Browse
  • Locate the file you just downloaded and open it from the list of results
  • Click Import

 

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have now imported references from PubMed into RefWorks. Click on View Last Imported Folder at the bottom right of the Import References box to see your references.
