Using RefGrab-It

Use the Right Arrow at the bottom of this window to move through the tutorial.

Introduction

This tutorial will show you how to install and use RefGrab-It, a RefWorks tool that allows you to pull citation information from web pages into RefWorks.

NOTE: You will not be able to access all of RefWorks' functionality during the tutorial, and will need to open links in new browser windows.

Use the active webpage on your right to complete the tutorial.

Logging Into RefWorks

In order to access RefWorks, log in on the screen to the right.

If you have never used RefWorks before, click here to access the RefWorks 1: Creating a RefWorks Account tutorial.

New Window

Note: You will need to open RefWorks in a new window to access its funtionality during the tutorial.

Click here to open RefWorks in a new window.

Installing RefGrab-It

Now that RefWorks is open in a new window, hover over Tools, at the top of the page.

  • Select RefGrab-It.

  • Follow the installation instructions for the RefGrab-It Bookmarklet.

When RefGrab-It is installed, it will appear in the bar near the top of your browser.

Using RefGrab-It

Now we are ready to try RefGrab-It.

  • Click on this link to go to CNN's website. Note: This will open in a new window.
  • Select an article title and click on it. This will take you to the article.
  • Now that you have opened an article, click on RefGrab-It from the bar at the top of your browser.

  • The RefGrab-It box will appear. Check the box next to the name of the article.

Before you click Import to RefWorks, click on the tab where RefWorks is open. This is only important in the tutorial and has to do with RefWorks' interaction with the tutorial software -- you will not need to do this during normal RefGrab-It interactions.

Click Import to RefWorks.

Viewing References in RefWorks

RefWorks will open (possibly in a new tab). The Import References window will appear.

Click on View Last Imported Folder to see the reference you imported.

Double-check your reference to make sure it looks accurate. Whenever you import references using RefWorks, it is a good idea to check to make sure they are complete.
