Finding Databases for Research

This tutorial will show you how to search for databases at the UC Merced Library.

What are Databases?

We search for information daily using search tools like Google and bing.

The UC Merced Library has similar search tools called databases that can help you find information for your academic research.

Finding Databases

You can find databases on the UC Merced Library home page.

  • Locate the Search options on the top right of the Library website and select the Databases tab.
  • If you know the name of a database, you can search for it here.
  • Example: enter JSTOR in the search field and click SEARCH.

There are several other ways to find databases if you don't have one in mind already.

Finding Databases By Subject

Return to the Search box at the top of the page.

Click on the Databases tab. Then click "See all databases."

At the top of the page, you will see a dropdown for All Subjects.

  • Select the subject that is most relevant to your research to see a list of related databases.

Finding Recommended Databases

Each subject includes suggestions for databases that are best bets. You can find these suggestions at the top of the list for each subject.

Best bet databases have been chosen by librarians because they are good places to start your research.

You can also see a list of popular databases listed next to the list of all databases.

Finding Databases By Type

From the list of all databases, click on the dropdown menu under "All Database Types" to see a list of types of materials.

Databases are grouped by format, such as images, maps, statistics, newspapers, and videos.

Select "Movie Reviews" to see a list of databases that include movie reviews.
