Using Melvyl

Introduction

This tutorial will show you how to use Melvyl, the combined catalog for all University of California libraries.

Use Melvyl to search for books and other materials in the UC Merced Library, other UC campus libraries, and libraries worldwide.

In this tutorial you will learn how to:

  • search for materials in Melvyl.
  • determine if an item in Melvyl is available for check out.
  • email yourself information about materials found in Melvyl.
  • gather citation information using Melvyl.

Use the active web page on your right to complete the tutorial.

Searching in Melvyl

To start your search:

  • select the Melvyl tab from the search box on the Library's homepage.

  • enter your search terms, e.g. maori tattoos.
  • click Go.

Narrow Search by Library

Your search results will include materials from libraries around the world. Click on the drop-down menu at the top of the page to limit to the UC Merced Library.

Select UC Merced Library, and click the gold Search button to the right.

Narrow Search by Format

Your results now show only materials available at the UC Merced Library.

You can narrow results further by using the Format limiters to the left of your search results.

Format options include:

  • articles
  • books
  • ebooks

NOTE: Other formats such as CDs and DVDs may be available for different searches.

Check for Availability of Print Books

To check availability of print books:

  • click the title of a book in the results list (not an ebook).
  • scroll down until you see information on Location, Status, and Call number.
  • if the item is available (if available, there will be a green check mark next to the word available), use the call number to locate the book in the library stacks.

How do I use a call number to find a book?

Email Information about an Item

To send yourself an email with the call number and other information about the item:

  • find the gray links at the top right of the results page and, click on Email.

  • enter your name and email address.
  • click Send e-mail.

Gather Citation Information

To get the citation for an item:

  • find the gray links at the top of the results page
  • click Cite/Export.

  • click on the desired citation format, e.g. APA, MLA, etc.
  • copy and paste the citation to your bibliography. You can also export to RefWorks.

Conclusion
